90. DIY Vanilla Latte Spa Candle

I don't know about you, but most store-bought candles these days are a bit too overpowering (olfactorily speaking). That's why I LOVE these subtly scented candles. They won't overwhelm your senses, but they will offer up some mild, relaxing scents.
I've adapted these instructions from Hello Glow.

You'll Need:

  • Small bowls or glasses, or small recycled jars
  • Candle wax (This is a great time to recycle what's left of those old candles—just make sure they're unscented. Or you can buy candle wax from the craft store.)
  • Candle wick (you can find these online or at the craft store.)
  • Coffee beans
  • Vanilla beans, chopped (in lieu of vanilla beans, you can also use vanilla extract.)
  • A Chopstick or wooden coffee stirrer (something to mix the still-warm wax with & something that you won't mind being forever coated with wax)
Instructions:

  1. Using a double broiler or a microwave safe bowl, melt the wax. I'd suggest using an old pan or bowl that you don't mind being coated with wax. I'd stay away from using any bowls or pots that you'd normally use for food. To create a double boiler, you can fill one (slightly larger) pot with water, then place a smaller pot, heat proof bowl, or tin in / over the water. Place the wax that is to be melted in the smaller pot / bowl / tin. (I used to use an old Pirouette cookie tin to melt my wax in—worked like a charm, but the tin got a bit hot to handle, so be careful.)
  2. If you're using vanilla extract, mix 1 Tbs. of extract into the melted wax.
  3. Dip the metal disk of the wick in the melted wax and quickly adhere it to the bottom of your cup or jar. If the wax cools before you can get the wick adhered, hold the wick from the top, letting the metal disk sit on the bottom of your jar and carefully pour a little bit of wax in the bottom of the jar. Hold the wick in place until the wax cools enough to hold it in place.
  4. Pour in a small layer of wax and add a layer of coffee beans and vanilla beans. (Skip the vanilla beans if you've added vanilla extract.)
  5. Then fill the rest of the cup with wax—leaving about a half inch of head room.
  6. Depending on how big your candle is, you may need to stir the wax to distribute the coffee beans.
  7. Allow the wax to cool / harden.
  8. Trim the wick to about a 1/2 inch.
