84. DIY Instagram Magnets

I found this project over at The Surznick Common Room website and it seems fairly easy as DIYs go. They have lots of pictures if you need a visual tutorial.

You'll Need:

  • 2x2" plain tiles (you can buy these at Home Depot or Lowe's)
  • Printed Instagram photos
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • Super glue
  • Round magnets
  • Straight edge (metal ruler)
  • Xacto Knife

Instructions

Note: If you buy a sheet of 36 2x2" tiles (from Home Depot or Lowe's) it'll cost you about $2. You'll need to separate the tiles, but it's way cheaper to do that than to buy the individual tiles.
  1. Pick out the photos you want to use for your magnets. You can view your Instagram account on your computer at Instagram.com/YourUsername
  2. There are a number of ways to capture your Instagram images (since Instagram doesn't really let you download from their site). If you have a Facebook page that you've posted to, you can open up and save those images to your desktop (just drag & drop). If you have image capturing software (like Grab on Mac, or Image Capture or Free Screenshot on PC) you can capture your images from the Instagram website.
  3. Next, copy all of the photos into a Word or Photoshop / AI / IND file. Resize the images so they measure 1.81" x 1.81". This gives the photos a small border—which gives a cleaner look.
  4. Print your photos. (If you don't have a printer, you can have them printed for you at any variety of places including: Staples, Office Depot, Fedex Office, UPS, etc.—it'll cost you about $2 per color print, so having multiple images per page is super cost effective.)
  5. Carefully cut out your photos. It may be easier to use a straight edge (ruler) and your Xacto knife.
  6. If necessary, separate and clean the glue off your tiles. If you bought a sheet of 36 tiles, you'll probably need to separate them with the Xacto or utility knife
  7. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the front of the tile and place your photo on top of that. Press down and smooth out the edges. This acts like glue.
  8. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge on top of the photo. Let it dry then add a second coat.
  9. After your tiles are completely dried, flip them over and superglue a magnet to the center of the back of the tile.
  10. After the glue is dry, your magnets are fridge-ready!
